NYE Hair

Obviously I am getting my "hur did" (an updo or blowout at the least) today for NYE. I would not leave my own untrained hair styling skills to sacrifice my hair on this momentous evening. It's the longevity issue that is most problematic for me. I tend to play with my hair A LOT, but if I have paid for the way it looks I am less likely to F it up. A few ideas I have been thinking of:

Hopefully Megan at Salon Laurie can make either of these happen. Wish me luck!
AND... Happy New Year!

Nudity

Abbey Lee Kershaw is one brave woman. She bares it all in the photo shoot for i-D Magazine's Winter 2010 issue. If there are any straight boys reading my blog (ahem, Patrick), I guess this one is for you... Beware of the bush:

This one is my favorite,"wink, wink". Hilarious.

NYE Shoes

Sexual foot fetishes are incredibly gross, but a sartorial foot fetish is complete gaiety.  It's no surprise that any outfit suitable for a holiday such as the New Year should be the paramount of jaw-dropping. How fabulous are these zapatos to complement your fancy New Year's Eve frock? J'adore.

Hot Chocolate

What is better then hot chocolate on a cold winter day? Nothing... Unless it's William Sonoma hot chocolate and you add a little snow outside and some marshmallows. Now we're talking.

Directions for two servings:

  1. Heat up 2 cups of milk slowly in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Bring to a simmer, but do not let milk boil.
  3. Add 6 tbsp. William Sonoma hot chocolate mix, 1 tbsp. at a time.
  4. Stir continuously.
  5. Pour into mugs and garnish with marshmallows.
  6. Enjoy!

My Obsession

These booties from the GAP Design Edition are now on sale! Say what? The uber chic black on black suede and leather wedges remind me a bit of Alexander Wang, which is always a good sign. Plus, the wedge heel makes them perfect for day to night and the lace-up is in this season. Love them!

"Creature Couture"

A bit late, but better late then never. Photographer Ted Sabarese "juxtaposes" fall fashion with soundsuits by performance artist Nick Cave. I love these!

JAK & JIL

Photoblogger Tommy Ton has made quite the name for himself cataloging street fashion around the world and showcasing it on his blog Jak & Jil and Style.com. He pinpoints trends with the precision of a surgeon, while maintaining the coolness factor associated with all anonymous street style blogs. I love his choice of style, and although he has access to the greatest fashion events in the world and therefore has a bit of an advantage, I wish I could see that kind of fashion in my everyday life. People who embrace the avant-garde and stick up their noses to the ordinary. Ok, so this may be a bit pretentious, but fashion is art, all the beauty and ugliness that comes with it.

34th Street Lights

A brief slide show of the 34th St. lights in Hampden this year. A great Christmas tradition I attended with some friends last weekend... Happy Holidays!

Delicious and (Un)Nutritious

It may only be 11am on this glorious Saturday morning, but I just stumbled upon a delicious sounding holiday cocktail, The Pointsetta, that I am going to make for my next fĂªte. Or, if I don't throw a holiday soiree (which is much more likely) I will tote around each of the ingredients to be sure this holiday reverie inducing libation can be made with unbridled enthusiasm and ease. To begin:

The Pointsetta

Here’s what you need:

1oz Kanon Organic Vodka
1/2oz lemon juice
1/2oz simple syrup
3 raspberries
6-8 mint leaves
Champagne to fill

Here’s how you make it:

1. Add all ingredients to shaking tin.
2. Muddle, shake and double strain into champagne glass
3. Top with champagne.
4. Garnish with one mint leaf.
5. Savor the goodness. I can't wait to try it!

First Snow of the Season

Yesterday we received our first snow in the Mid-Atlantic. Baltimore to be precise. I was happily blogging at work, when I realized I might go blind from excessive fluorescent lighting in our mini-office space (Do you have my sthapler?), and opened the shades to let in some glorious natural light. It was snowing! Shock.

Normally, I wouldn't expect snow until January or February, or I would expect to get snow for Christmas and end up sadly disappointed. But this was heavenly, just a kiss of snow to cover the sidewalks and stick in the grass for a day or so and make everything look cleaner, like an industrial Winter Wonderland. It was a surprise that made my day a little happier, put a little extra pep in my step, and made me realize I should probably invest in a car scraper thingy. The next morning...

Inspiration

This sketch from Rodarte got me so excited to see the movie Black Swan with the girls on Sunday. I've heard excellent reviews so far, and it only came out tonight in Baltimore. Oh, and I think the boy might tag along after he heard about the scene where Natalie Portman is experimenting with her... Uh... Whoo-hah.

The Man Repeller

One of my favorite blogs, shown to me by my BFF Analeigh a couple months ago, is The Man Repeller. Its author Leandra Medine is a hysterical and sarcastic writer poking fun at all things de rigueur to anyone trying to climb the sartorial ladder. The catch to the whole man repeller schtick is that she herself is an avid endorser of these so called opposite gender turn offs. Born and raised in NYC, and spending her adolescence in uniform while attending an Orthodox Jewish private school, the now 21 year old defines a "manrepeller" in Webster Dictionary terms...

MAN·RE·PELL·ER1  [MAHN-REE-PELLER]

–noun
outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.
–verb (used without object),-pell·ing, -pell·ed.
to commit the act of repelling men:
Girl 1: What are you wearing tonight?
Girl 2: My sweet lime green drop crotch utility pants
Girl 1: Oh, so we're man repelling tonight?
*DISCLAIMER: the above conversation took place in this room 5 minutes ago.
Origin:
2009-10; repellius (ptp. of repellia to eliminate male attention), equiv. to L repel- (s. of repellix) unattractive, celibate, paris fashion week, M.C. Hammer + -repel -ler1

man·re·pell·ant, noun

The Man Repeller pokes fun, most recently, at  turbans, harem pants, jewelry that looks like a torture instrument, jumpsuits, ponchos, furry garments resembling large unidentified animals, boyfriend jeans, clogs and formal sweatpants. Females have always had a different opinion of what looks good; obviously men want more flesh and body hugging silhouettes, women want to look like the runways- often nowhere near the male ideal. Now, let me find my "birth control glasses" so I can read the press write ups (NY Times, Lucky Magazine guest blog, and Harpers Bazaar feature) Leandra has earned for her meticulous break down of trends.

Holidays are for Giving

I think this Christmas card from Burberry's PR Director, Miles Freedland, is such a heartfelt idea. The band Razorlight performs "Can't Complain About Christmas" in a snowy alley, seemingly in London...? Rockabilly style with a bluesy sound is sure to start me up and chill me out at the same time. It makes me want to get all snuggled in with some footie pajamas and a cup of hot chocolate.  I really LOOOOVE Christmas!

Go to the website and every friend you send the adorable holiday greeting to will help to donate proceeds to the Burberry Foundation.

Rehab.

No it's not what you think. Although some of you know me as a "good time girl" I am not entering rehab. But I did stumble, figuratively speaking of course, upon this great photo shoot by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia from September 2007. A throwback of sorts.

It's interesting to think of all the celebrities and pseudo-celebrities that have entered rehab at some point throughout their careers. Off the top of my head I can list a half dozen... Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst, Robert Downey Jr., Nicole Richie, Britney Spears, even Jenna Bush! (I'd imagine that one was just short of another Watergate scandal.) Some did it for publicity and some really needed outside help to combat their addictions.

This photo shoot, although on a very serious subject matter, infuses a little humor into the heavy topic at hand. To see super models, who may or may not need to see a nutritionist at the least (totally different argument), acting as rehab patients and going bonkers is compelling. I find the girls showing of their "Britneys" especially cheeky. Remember that moral dilemma that so many "IT" girls insisted on forgetting about? Oops.

Check out the rest of the photoshoot here. I've selected some of my favorites below.
